The winds in the Outer hebrides are like nothing I have ever experience. The blast can be so strong that you literally cannot stand up. During a particularly stormy evening I ventured out to Luskentrye and had to find shelter among the sand dunes as 2 minutes on the beach left me unable to see due to the sand being whipped into my eyes.
The conditions were horrendous but experience has taught me that if you can endure them you are often rewarded with something special.
As the storm clouds raced across the Sound of Harris, bringing wave after wave of torrential downpours I setup my tripod to create a painterly composition of the wind whipping the maram grass. Using a long exposure and having to use my body weight to hold the tripod in place just long enough to get the image I was able to capture the movement in both the dunes and clouds.
This is the real Isle of Harris, a beautiful but wild and uncompromising island where nature is in charge and we are merely fortunate observers.
